CJ Roberts is presently under a multi-year contract to the City of Encinitas to provide annual pavement evaluations and prepare the overlay and slurry seal contracts along with bidding and construction support. The work involves coring, materils tests, and visual evalution of the existing pavement throughout the City along with reccomendations for pavement strutural design and remediation.
CJ Roberts has been assisting the City with their pavement rehabilitation program since 2018. We were honored to receive an American Public Works Association (APWA) Project of the Year Award for our work in 2024.
CJ Roberts was retained by the Unified Port of San Diego to undertake a redesign of North Harbor Drive and adjacent parking areas between Nimitz Drive and Scott Street. This work involved the reconstruction and realignment of a 4-lane arterial roadway and conversion of excess right of way and frontage road into several parking lots as well as design of three traffic signals, utility relocations, LED street lighting, and landscaping. CJ Roberts was the prime consultant overseeing the work of sub-consultants and responsible for project coordination and approvals with the City of San Diego and other agencies as well as public outreach activities. CJ Roberts Inc also provided construction engineering support including submittal reviews and RFI responses as well as preparation of as-constructed drawings. The project received a 2016 APWA Project of the Year Award
CJ Roberts served as the Resident Engineer for a series of eight drainage improvement projects in the vicinity of Lakeside in the County of San Diego. The work was completed under the on-going As-Needed Construction Management contract with the County of San Diego. CJ Roberts has maintained on-going support for the County's construction projects since 2010. This project involved low flow hight water creek crossings, improvements to existing drainage inlets and outfalls, and included installation of wing-walls and sliding trash grates to accommodate maintenance and high water events. This project received a 2019 APWA Honors Award.
CJ Roberts was the prime engineering consultant working with Global Energy Systems (GES) on this world class design-build energy storage project for UCSD. This project is one of the largest, most environmentally-friendly, battery-based energy storage systems in the nation. The 2.5 megawatt (MW), 5 megawatt-hour (MWh) system with enough capacity to power 2,500 homes is integrated into the university’s microgrid, which generates 92 percent of the electricity used on campus annually and is considered one of the world’s most advanced microgrids.
CJ Roberts Inc. prepared cost estimates, specifications, and design plans including demolition, grading, drainage, surface improvements, signing and striping, and erosion control as well as electrical and structural plans from our sub-consultants. Other duties included coordination with the suppliers, contractor, and UCSD as well as construction engineering support.
CJ Roberts provided the civil design servics for the upgrades to three of the City of San Diego fire stations. Our work included ADA access improvements and parking requiring reconstruction of nearby roads, sidewalks, ramps, and site grading and drainage in support of the overall renovations at these three locations.
In addition to this fire station assignment, CJ Roberts has complete more than a dozen other ADA enhancement projects for the City of San Diego over these recent years under various as-needed design contracts.
Under a recently awarded multi-year construction management contract with the City of San Diego, CJ Roberts is providing construction management services for the installation of large water pipe replacement along the University Avenue corridor in San Diego. The University Avenue Pipeline Replacement Project will replace approximately 4.33 miles (22,722 feet) of pipeline within the University Heights, Hillcrest and North Park communities. The project will also reconstruct pedestrian curb-ramps to facilitate access with persons with disabilities. City street surfaces will be reconstructed with slurry seal, paving and striping as needed with vegetation and landscaping within the impacted areas. Our Resident Engineer is responsible for managing the General Engineering Contractor and coordinating with related City departments. Special duties include management of night shift work.
The South Sante Fe Avenue project, which commenced in 2009 and completed in 2013 included the reconstruction of a 0.7-mile segment between Montgomery Drive and 700 feet east of Woodland Drive. The project widened the roadway from two lanes to four, adding approximately 1.8 new lane-miles of traveled roadway at a cost of $14 million dollars. As part of the As-Needed Construction Management contract with the County, CJ Roberts Inc provided the Office Engineer position at the construction site office. Our staff provided daily oversight of the construction activities and processing of progress payments and other construction documents.
CJ Roberts participated on two $5M As-Needed Facility Assessment contracts for the City of San Diego and in conjunction with prime consultants AECOM and Kitchell. CJ Roberts staff helped to assess 1200 City properties including plants, buildings, and city parks. CJ Roberts Inc provided 6 field staff to complete inspections of electrical, plumbing, structural, drainage, grading and ADA compliance inspections. CJ Roberts Inc also prepared several portions of the final assessment reports. Thru this work CJ Roberts staff demonstrated their expertise in assessing existing conditions which included asphalt and concrete paving, curbs, sidewalks, and existing ADA facilities.
CJ Roberts has maintained an on-going as-needed construction support contract with Westfield since the company was established in 2010. We have provided construction engineering to troubleshoot issues that arise and are the responsible in charge for the inspection of all Westfield’s projects in San Diego County. One such project was the UTC Mall Reconstruction where CJ Roberts provided construction engineering support and 24 hour inspection services for the Phase I redevelopment. Other work under this contract has included projects at Horton Plaza, Carlsbad El Camino Real, North County Fair Mall, and Plaza Bonita Mall numbering close to 40 task orders in total.
